Cameroon Profile
Sometimes referred to as 'Africa in Miniature' for its geological and cultural diversity. Cameroon has a shoreline in the Gulf of Guinea and borders Nigeria, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The Country covers an area of 475,000km2 with diverse terrains from coastal plains in the southwest, an elevated plateau in the centre, mountainous regions in the west to plains in the north of the Country. Cameroon has a population of 16.2 million people, comprised of five principal cultural groups. Over 24 dialects are spoken with English and French being the official languages. For twenty five years following independence from Britain and France in 1960, Cameroon was one of the most prosperous countries in Africa until a fall in commodity prices for its principal commodity exports.
Today Cameroon's major commodity is petroleum, which provides 50% of the Country's export revenues. Because of its oil resources and favourable agricultural conditions for cocoa, coffee, and cotton, Cameroon remains one of the best-endowed primary commodity economies in sub-Saharan Africa.
